I am in need of some help with my Firehouse Project, me along with 3 other members are in the process of repairing our 1957 Ford F-800 Firetruck which was towed back to the house with a broken camshaft, cracked block and Bent valves. The engine we had in the Truck was a 317ci Lincoln Y block, it is not the original 368 but it did the job. We now cannot locate any Lincoln Y blocks in our area and only have Ford Y blocks to choose from.. Will a 312 Y block bolt up to our Bellhousing, or are the Patterns Different from the Lincoln to Ford?

If you decide to go with a FT motor I have a bellhousing and front mount which might fork with a FE,I do know where some Lincoln Y blocks are but they have been in the open and probably got some water in them.

Butchering up everything I can get my hands on in Dayton Ohio

A Ford Y block Bell housing is a different pattern than what you have. You may be able to find a heavy truck that has a 292 and the same transmission as in your F-800. If that is the case, you could use the Ford Y Block with the matching bell housing and bolt to your existing transmission. By 1957 heavy trucks should have transitioned to the 302/332 Lincoln based engine rather than the earlier 317. Trucks never used the 368 version. Finding a good running 332 is not easy, however, the best source would be used Fire trucks from 57 to 63.

An easier option than adapting a Y Block would be to find a heavy duty FE 361/391, There should be plenty of those out there. The Lincoln Y block and the FE bell housing bolt pattern is very close

The 317 wasn't the original motor, in fact I have no idea what was originally in the truck, I was told it originally had a 332 or a 368 engine in it. I am very interested in the 361/391 option, how close are the bellhousing patterns? Would I be able to modify our existing bellhousing or find another one to fit the T-98 Borg Warner? How about the motor mounts are they the same? I found information on a ford 390 engine, are they the same as the 391?

Unless you change bell housing the 312 will not fit.

That could be an issue since it appears that you have a hydraulic cluch mechanism.

Bell housing for the Ford FE series 390 engine is a different bellhousing than the 312 and also your current engine.

Where are you located? There are some 368 cores here in Maryland that I am aware of.

Most Ford Y-Block truck bell housings have a mount for the hydraulic cylinder.

All the Ford FE series engines have the same bolt pattern, 332, 352, 360, 361, 390, 391, 406, 427, 428.
