I have a 1960 f100 custom cab that I am pretty sure that was all stock. I pulled the 292 out,it was tired and beat. It had a ford o matic fluid cooled that has that canister on the side of it that taps into the block of the motor. I picked up another 292 that has a ford o matic on it and on the bellhousing it has mesh. Is it air cooled?

Here is the thing....I am not sure which one to use. I would like the fluid cooled one since it was original but I am told not to use the cooler? Why is that? Then others say they work great. Should I use that fluid cooled trans and transfer all the hard lines off the old motor to the new? I also was told to.get a trans cooler on the radiator.Or just use the air cooled trans? I am stumped on this.

The one with the mesh is likely an earlier air cooled. Which one to use? First do you know what condition both are in? That would be a start. Beyond that, I don't know if there would be fitting differences. Someone else should chime in..

OK I will take a shot. On any automatic transmission you use the big enemy is HEAT. So if your two Fordomatics are both working about the same then for light duty each will be suitable to use. If you will be doing any heavy work or going fast then the water-cooled FOM is the better choice BUT not with the side cooler you mention. Use at least a radiator with an A/T cooler built into it and then ADD an auxiliary transmission cooler as well. Find out which of the two cooler lines from the FOM are line in and line out and plumb the radiator first then the aux cooler then return to the FOM. Pete

Lowlife,

Water cools 32 times more efficently than air. Aftermarket coolers are made as additional cooling only. To run the trans with water cooling you will need a radiator with a cooler.

I always treat 2nd hand autos as cores. You may get lucky and be able to run one for a while.

Early autos have thier share of issues, are expensive to repair and hard to get parts for. It may be cheaper and better to go with something else. Of course depending on your budget.

 Cheers

Warren

This xooler doesnt go to the radiator. It goes to the block on the motor.

As the old saying goes "SIZE MATTERS" and your present cooler is both too small and is not explsed to enough air flow. Do a google search for transmission coolers and see. Pete
