Hello all,

I did a search on the site for this problem but couldn't find anything. I have a 292 in '56 F100 with an AOD behind it. Problem, no oil pressure. I spun the pump up with a drill and got 30 pounds. I put the distributor in started it up, no oil pressure. Pulled the pump, pump drive and the distributor. The pump drive spun in the distributor so it would not drive the pump. The distributor was a rebuilt with 0 miles on it, still building the truck. My question is this a common problem? My Mustang has the same type setup in a 302 and it works fine. Never have run across anything like this and I don't want it to happen again. So, if it is a problem I would like to get what ever it takes to keep it form happening again.

Thanks for reading my ramblings,

Doug

Doug,

When you pulled the pump and the distributor, I assume that you looked at both the oil pump female end and the distributor female end. The hex drive rod should fit into both snugly and SHOULD DEFINITELY NOT SPIN inside the hole. Who rebuilt the distributor and was the wrong shaft used? Did you get all of the parts from the same manufacturer?

What kind of shape is the pump drive hex in? Does it have the "clip" on it? Although the distributor is rebuilt, it's unlikely that the drive piece is new. I and others on this site have had issues with so called rebuilt distributors, that likely didn't meet new specs. Check all parts involved closely.

Your problem is either the distributor is wrongly assembled or the oil pump drive is worn enough not to engage the distributor. My bet is the distributor is the problem

It was a NAPA rebuilt distributor. The drive shaft, oil pump end was fine, the distributor end was rounded a bit but the distributor was worn out. It was like I said worn out from the rebuilders. I bought another rebuilt distributor, checked the end this time, a new drive rod and a new pump. All is good now, just don't want it to happen again. My question was has this happened and apparently it has to some of you. Oh well, here's hoping it works. Thanks for the replies, I really want to keep the Y-Block in the truck. I'm sick of seeing chevy's under the hood of everything!

Never seen it happen yet myself. Anything mechanical can and will eventualy wear out or fail. Oil pump could have locked up and took out the distributor. Not someting that happens often and I could see how a rebuilder could have missed it.
