Does anybody know if i can use one of these size of pistons on a 272 Y-block?

3.81" +.060 from 292 CID
3.86" +.060 from 312 CID

I`ve seen a stroker kit called "310 cu in kit for 272 blocks" and I`m trying to figure out what the trick is

Thanks

reading this page leads me to believe to get 310 out of a 272 (3.62") bore it out to a 292 (3.75") and use a 312 crankshaft thats machined to get a 3.51" stroke.

I think Mummert's kits are pistons, rods and crank. Chuck

John Mummert advertises a 310 CID kit and a 322 Cid kit for 272 blocks.  The 322 requires a 312 crank.

People says 272 and 292 blocks are the same, so I was thinking I should be able to overbore my 272 to at least 3.81" +.060 from 292 CID or whatever you guys do to overbore a 292 block, not sure if this info is true

From this site http://ford-y-block.com/displacement.htm i understand that:

3.86" +.060 from a 312CDI I would have 309CDI on a 272/292 block or

3.81" +.060 from a 292CDI I would have 301CDI on a 272/292 block

Let me know if I`m wrong because probably I am BigGrin

272 and 292 are not the same castings but use the same crank and main journal size.

292 and 312 use the same casting but 312 has a different crank and main journal size.

312 cranks can be machined to fit 292 blocks

Y blocks vary in cylinder wall thickness because of core shift. Checking the thickness when rebuilding is by far the best way to determine how far you can bore.

You'll find that John Mumert and Ted Eaton are amongst the best sources for Y block parts, information and machining. They are both members of this forum.

cheers

Just to clarify my previous reply! Stroker kit will get you 310, but in answering your orig query, you asked if "3.81" +.060 from 292 CID
3.86" +.060 from 312 CID would go in 272 block

i havent seen a 272 go past 292 bore regardless of sonic testing without potential problems and is not recommended in my expeirence. ?Smile

The only way to know is have the block sonic checked for wall thickness.

i bored a 272  .040 over 292.i wouldnt think twice about boring a 272 to 292 without sonic testing.theres always a chance of a bad one but its slim.without chance its a dull life.
