Bought a replacement engine for my 59 Galaxie with a stock 292. Seller told me it was a 292 from 1957. ECZ 6016C block identified. ECZ G on the heads. Can someone here identify by the following picture if this indeed is a 57 292 ? Is there a benefit of using the heads from a 57 engine compared to the 59 ?

It's a 292 or 312. The heads are higher compression than they would have been in 59.

So to ahve a better engine, I should not use my 59 heads. The 57 ones are better. I will have to use my 59 inlet manifold, this one came without. Also my 59 carb will have to be used. Later I will try to find suitable headers, and a better inlet, and carb. And a funnyer cam. But that will happen when I fix the original engine. Right now I am only trying to get a temp engine that don't smoke like a cole factory.

First, I would say that the ECZ-G heads would be the preferred heads to use regardless of the year (57 vs. 59) At first glance, the ECZ casting on the block could be a 312 or a 292. From the picture of the crank flange, I still couldn't tell one way or the other. I would suggest putting the motor on an engine stand and remove the oil pan to see what the main caps say. If they are ECZ main caps, chnces you have a 312. Rono

If the heads on your '59 are 5752-113, I wouldn't argue that they are worse. They have slightly larger chambers which will lower compression, everything else being equal. There are benefits with larger chambers and compression can be brought up with domed pistons. For street use, there will not be much of a noticeable difference between G's and 113s. The engine block in my truck came from a '59 Fairlane which had C0AE heads which is probably correct if it was late production. Now I'm curious. I should check the date codes. The G's will be better than C0AE's but this is something that you may or may not notice at the lower RPM typical of a street engine. And, no matter which heads you end up using, a fresh new engine will be much better than a worn out engine that smokes like a coal factory and if it is a 312, 20 extra ci never hurts.

From what I understand the 113s are all posted and with the unshrouding of the intake valve which is better than the G heads they will flow alittle better so the 113s might actually be a better choice. The 113s seem to be the ones most hotrodders want. There's only about a 1/2 point differents in compression the Gs at or about 9.5 to 9.7 and the 113s at 9.

Didn't Ted do a head comparision? Seems like the G's worked best. then 113's and 471's.?

Yep. www.y-blocksforever.com/forums/Topic61587-3-1.aspx?A set of stock 113s was not tested but a ported set took the top spot of the iron heads. Of course, this does not necessarily mean that the casting is superior; it may be better port work.

I did look at stock head comparisons on a site which included other makers as well and the stock 113s slightly outflowed the Gs. They also outflowed the generals heads of that era as well. This may have been on Mummerts site in the past??
