I would say you are right on the money at 5000 limit. If you do something dumb and miss a shift you will not hurt anything.

Ford at one time issued a RPM limit recommendation of 5400 for standard valve train parts. It would be wise to stay under that with old springs. Peak power was at about 4600 RPM, so going higher than what they recommended is pointless.

As I recall my totaly stock 292 prety much ran out of steam around 5200.

The 292 (+.060 = 301) I put together I was shifting around 4000 till I talked to Ted and he told me shift around 5500, but then again I have dual springs from Mummerts on the valve train along with steel crank, C1TE rods and Ross forged Pistons

With the original valve train, 5000 would be the limit, that is unless the valves float before then. Depends on how tired the valve springs are.
