Did you try it? I never heard of any one taking a fuel pump apart without first determining that it does not work.

morning Paul

it was brand new but i needed to "clock" the IL/OL ports and it was only 2 more screws to remove the lower bowl that contained the valves. thats where i found this rubber cube. i initially thought someone had left a piece of packing in there. but i suspect it is a cheaper way of providing a "pulsator"

what is the pulsator in the pump for and how does it work?

i was also surprised how much effort it took to operate the pump

answering my own question here

seems its to smooth out the pumps pulses.  most info came from forums discussing EFI in tank pumps.these setups use a piece of flexiblehose on the out put of the pump which also isolates pump noise.

Summit has a repair kit for a similar Holley pump and,  lo and behold, there is that little rubber cube.

one piece of info that came to light that may be of use to those who like to do your own rebuilds (diaphragm replacement)is that when replacing the bowl with the 6  10-32 screws the operating arm of the pump must be in the fully operated position, which is a bit of a struggle. by the way the pump is a FE Carter .     hope this may help someoneBigGrin
