i need some more education please

just took delivery of a new fuel pump. could not resist and stripped it out,took 2 days to find where one of the screws went!! question.... what is the function of the pulsator?? the pictures i have seen show a can and a disc with a series of holes. this one has a small cube of rubber, i nearly threw it away.
