You have ECZ-C heads! They are the same on each engine, the compression cahnges because the volume of the cylinder changes as the ci gets bigger. 292 or 312, now that is the question.

You could find someone with a boroscope. Drain the oil and look through the drain plug hole. It would also give you a good look at the pickup screen and see if the is anything lingering around in the oil pan that would cause alarm.
Dont judge me, you dont know my situation.

It sorta sounds like your attempting to find out if you have a 312 since you want to look at a main cap. You could take a look see at the crankshaft flange where it meets the tranny.See if it has the "dot" or not. Still not 100% identification but beats pulling the pan. Oldmics

In 1956 the C heads were on 312s with automatics the B heads were on 292s with automatics and 312s with stick shifts. In 1957 they went to G heads with all V8s I believe.

Mummerts head chart does list the "C" head as being installed on the 1956, 292 engine also. Just sayin Oldmics

Given the 2 Bbl carb & intake it's very unlikely that it's a 312.

The "A" manifold mentioned would have been on a 56 as well as having a 4bbl teapot to fit that manifold. May be a 312-course ALL "Y" blocks are 312s RIGHT Oldmics
