Guys;

What would be a good method of torquing the crank dampner bolt while keeping the crank from rotating? What's different here is that I am mounting a solid aluminum blower drive pulley to the crank pulley with a 4" x9/16" bolt. I was thinking about using a piston stop in the #1 cylinder but I don't want to damage the piston in any way.

Use a flywheel turning wrench to hold the flywheel. Make a tool to bolt to the rear flange of the crank. Use some longer bolts on the rear flange so you can wedge a big wrench in there to hold it. Get it as tight as you can for now and wait until it is in the car to finish.

If the engine is still out just put a bolt in the flywheel that is long enough to contact the block. Rotate it until the bolt is against one of the casting webs. Have you some pictures of the project? I'd like to get details on the parts used in the blower installation. Chuck

I just get a heavy box end wrench (box at both ends) and bolt one end to one of the clutch mounting holes on the flywheel (if you have it installed) and the other end to a bell housing bolt. I like to set it up so the flywheel is pulling against the bell housing bolt rather than pushing, but I don't know if it makes a difference. I do the bolts up tight.

Thanks guys...I'll get a bolt to go through the crank flange. Chuck, I'm polishing the blower brackets brackets right now and I need to change the pan to a truck pan because this motor is going into a 37 Ford 5W coupe I just bought (Haven't picked up the car yet) So, as soon as I get to a point to take some good pictures I will.

With tha pan off, you can stick a bar (I use a 1/2" drive extension, big end) in one of the balance holes in a counterweight and rest it against the pan rail.  Or you can stick a 2x2 block of wood between a couple of rod big ends and the pan rail.
