I attached my 292 Y Block to an AOD with the adaptor available from Bendten's. Everything fit like a glove and the swap from the stock manual transmission to the automatic was quick and easy. I do not see any way to cover up the opening below the adaptor plate. If I understand correctly, the original AOD had a mid plate but that is not used in this application. The original Y Block had a dust cover under the fly wheel attached to the bell housing. This modification leaves an open gap at the bottom of the adopter plate. Has anyone ever seen how this is protected from the elements?

Aod had a block plate that fit between the engine and the transmission. The inspection plate is the one at the bottom. You may have to fab one, or get one from a junkyard and make it fit. The adapter you have is thick enough to drill and tap some mounting holes in the bottom.

There was some confusion about whether or not the adaptor needed to include or not include the midplate you provided in the photo. I contacted Bob direct and he explained his adaptor did not require the midplate, which left me in the dark about how to cover the opening. I have a message into him and will post the answer when I hear back from him. If the original will not work I think you are dead on. Thanks for the photos. That really cleared up exactly what the mid plate and inspection cover looked like on the original AOD. Im thinking it would be best to just fabricate one and have it cover everything.

I used the midplate on mine. Had to do some cutting to clear the Y-Block starter but it fit well. I had the plate with the transmission and couldn't see not using it. Chuck

Chuck did you use the Bendtsens adaptor? If so did it cause any clearance less than 1/8" between the flywheel and torque converter? Also, I can see the original midplate and inspection cover working on the transmission side, but I cant picture how it would work to cover the opening in the adaptor?

A friend used that adapter and was told by Bendtsen NOT to use the Mid plate. Last I talked to him he was happy with the setup but was still in the process of fabbing a dust cover. I'll contact him and see if he has completed it yet and has any suggestions. When I installed my C-4 using a Flat-o adapter I had to fab a dust cover. It was relatively easy because the Flat-o bell is already drilled and tapped for one. Not that that has anything to do with your situation...

I made a simple cover from thin plate with canted top. There is couple of original mounting holes to keep plate in place.

I fabbed my own to cover the flywheel and used aluminum. with a 90 degree section. But to make it work, I also shortened the bottom of the adapter to be flush with the block. I also did not use a plate between the trans and block. Once you get that massive hunk of aluminum out of the way it's pretty straightforward. FYI, when I spoke to bendstens over the phone he said I didn't really need a flywheel cover???? What???

I think I put the plate between the transmission and adapter. I don't have the car here to check. I do remember I had to do some cutting for clearance. So far I have had no problems with the setup. I wasn't aware that Bendtsens recommended not to use the plate. I will have a look in the spring. Since the bolt holes are on the bell housing I wouldn't expect it to be difficult to make a plate. Or possibly use the cover portion from the original part. Chuck
