I have located and purchased a '57 Autolite 4100 with 1.08 venturis. It may or not need rebuilding but it had had been rebuilt many years ago but it was never installed. I think it was quite a find as it will go very well with my '57 B manifold. The only thing is I'll have to see if my '56's air cleaner will work. If not I will need to look for a '57 air cleaner to make this "period correct".

After all I have read about the 4100, I don't want anything else. It looks like a fairly bullet proof carb compared to the other carbs. I've cross referenced the 1.08's and there are some that were used on the big block engines as well. What's the difference between the ones used on the small blocks and those on the big blocks? The only thing I can figure so far it might be the jetting. Any way I'm still looking for one from someone reputable.

I'm unable to identify the specifics of the 1.08s used on the big blocks. Enyeart indicates on the Pony website area 'Frequently Asked Questions', [question 20, 'What is a 4100 (1.12) Spreadbore?'] that '1966 only Galaxie and T-Birds with 390 and 428 applications used the small [1.08] carb for emissions reasons'.

My guess would be like yours. Likely FoMoCo changed the primary and secondary jetting and perhaps changed the power valve and adjusted the accelerator pump stroke.

Jetting is different between the big block and small block carbs however jetting is easy to change.

The problem with some 1.08 carbs (C6SF, C6AF just to name a few of the 1.08's) that were designed as smogger carbs for the big block engines. The big engine carbs use different booster venturiis than the small engine (289 cu.in) carbs. This was done to still have some running quality and performance with a small carb on a big engine and still meet emission standards. The truth is performance still sucked. Those smogger carbs are very hard to tune, you will not be happy. The only way I have found to make them work to my liking is to swap the booster venturiis from a small block designed carb. If you have to do this you may as well purchase the "good" carb the first time. That is why if you see a Mustang carb listed (C5ZF, C6ZF) the seller is asking an additional $200.00 plus for that carb vs a C6AF or C6SF 1.08 carb. Those Mustang/289 engined carbs are so much better engineered.

Another thing is if you are using an Autolite 4100 on the "B" manifold you have to use a spacer under the carb or you will have a vacuum leak at the front of the carb by the idle adjuster screws. The 4100's have a bridged mounting base instead of a flat mounting base like the Holleys or Edelbrock's also the base is slightly larger than a holley. With the bridged base the contact area between the carb base and manifold is near zero at the front of the carb. After a couple of weeks the gasket will be sucked out.

Yblocks like spacers under the carb so works well to use one. I usually use a 1" spacer others have used 2" with good results. You hood clearance is the issue with some engines.

Try this fellow. I have heard very good reports on his work. He is a regular on ebay also. Again I have no interest in this company.

If Pony would have still been in business, I would have probably bought one from them. After all I have read about the 4100, I don't want anything else. It looks like a fairly bullet proof carb compared to the other carbs.

I checked on Pony and though their website is still up, others have said they are no longer in business.

Yes, the Pony Carburetor website is still 'up'. Jon Enyeart, founder and owner of Pony Carburetor, passed on 8/29/11 at the age of 59, succumbing to brain cancer. Everything I've read indicates that the company is closed.

Jon KNEW the Autolite carbs and was a believer and proponent of their attributes. There's some interesting carburetor information on the website. As I recall, in addition to custom restoration of carburetors, he was marketing modified 1.12s having smaller primary venturies (1.00 !) coupled with larger secondary venturies (1.1.8 !). -Kind of an 'internal spread-bore' concept for improved street operation on smaller cubic inch engines. Too, per-the-website, Jon was working on a carburetor of his own design. Perhaps that is what Summit is now selling. -I'm attempting to connect dots with my last statement. Some say Jon spent everything he had pursuing experimental treatments to try to overcome the cancer.

I've seen their listings on fleecebay and they seem to have good feedback.

i have had no dealings or contact with this company so cannot comment on reliability etc. but they may be of interest. 1.08s are pricey and fly off the shelves. they also had a couple of 1.19s??
