Hello,

I am new to y blocks and hope that I can get a little help. I am installing a 272 in to my 1960 f100. the 272 has the car front timing cover and car bell housing.

I would like to swap the timing cover and bell housing from my truck 292 motor. I believe these should swap without any issues? Any tips or suggestions from

other who have done this swap?

thank you

Bryan

Hi Bryan

If the 272 motor came out of a car, you will need to change the oil pan, oil pick-up tube and relocate the dip stick tube to the right side of the block. The truck timing cover will work on the 272 motor, but you will need to use the front motor mount and some of the longer bolts with the truck timing cover. I'm sure other will have more advice.

Ron is right on with the info. The swap of timing covers is pretty straight forward. Most passenger car water pumps are 5/8" shaft, while most trucks should have the 3/4" shaft. That might be something to consider too. Essentially the water pumps are the same however. Got any photos?

So I can use the car water pump on the truck cover? I pulled the truck pan, cover and front mounting bracket off of my 292 today. Just need to get them cleaned up and put on the 272. Where is a good place to buy gaskets for this engine? So I need to relocate the dip stick and oil pickup. Should I use the oil pickup tube from the truck motor?

Also I need to figure out what solenoid I need with this starter. Can someone please advise?

thank you

To relocate the dipstick, knock the plug from the block (from the bottom side) and install the truck dipstick tube. Use the oil pickup that's in the truck pan. Your local parts store should be able to get gaskets. If your truck already has a starter solenoid on the inner fender or firewall, it will energize the starter. If it's been removed, your local parts store can supply one. The passenger water pump will bolt to the truck cover.

the starter solenoid was taken from the truck so I am trying to figure out what all I need on the starter system. Is this just the solenoid or is there any type of relay?

The solenoid IS a relay. It is all you need.
