Hi,
It has been a while since I posted. The last time here I was looking for a ford-o-matic transmission for my '56 Parklane. In that process, I met Jerry Christenson here in Minnesota. Jerry (and many of the postings here) have caused me to rethink transmission choices and I appear headed to a C4 installation.
Jerry puts floor shifters in the cars he converts. I would like to keep the column shift on mine. How does one get the column shift to work with its PRNDL positions with the C4 that has more choices?
Thanks

Mike: I have found on my '57s that the shifter has enough travel to reach all the positions on my FMX conversions. The pointers don't fall exactly on target, and I have to rotate the column slightly clockwise so the shift lever doesn't hit the column tube.

If you do the C-4 conversion get a trans from a 73 to 79 f150 as the arm will bolt up to the original rod,I am on my second C-4 in my 55 and the first came from a 74 van and I had to extend the rod but I replaced it with one from a mid 70s truck and I had to find another rod and it went right on. The arm has to point in the 9 o clock position to work with the original linkage.

314 (11/29/2013) I have an fmx in my 56 everything is lined up on the column which means no low.i don't miss it as im not racing the car.also the truck c4 has a different bell than one out of a mustang or small car do they make kits for both.314, You don't used the C-4 Bell. The kit does come with a new bell housing to adapt the C-4 to the Y-Block. You can get one for a car or for a truck (truck has the side mounts). Check Flat-o Products http://www.flat-o.com/carproducts/yblock.htm or John Mummert http://www.ford-y-block.com/c4adapt.htm

yes I know that but their are two c4s.the bells don't interchange.the ones that came in trucks and full size cars was different but we still called them c4s.maybe they were known as something else but that's what we called them.

Hi, misunderstood what you were saying. I think you are referring to the Pan fill case with the 164 tooth bell as opposed to the case filled case. You want the case fill case, preferably a '71 up because they have the 24/26 spline input shaft as opposed to the 24/24 early C-4 or the '70 one year only 26/26 shaft. Hope that answers your ?? It's past my bedtime...

re c4s,it is my understanding the panfills wher a tougher trans used mainly in light vans and pickups.the one i used on a preveous swap had a more positive shift than case fill.
