Hey guys, just as name says, my friends call me Chewy. I have a 59 Edsel Ranger 2 door post/sedan. End of last summer the 2nd cylinder back decided it didn't like it's rod end and spit it out the side of the block adding an unwanted window to the motor right behind the generator mount. I picked up a 292 from a truck for it that I am getting ready to drop in instead. The car has a late model 3 speed with OD out of a 80's van that has been redrilled and turned down, it worked beautifully with the straight 6 and the od got me about 22-24 mpg. So I really want to keep that trans (not to mention there is now a hole in the floor). I am wanting to know what additional parts I will need to bolt this in. I am just going to trim the rear motor mount ears off the bell housing, and bolt my clutch to the flywheel. I guess my questions are more which clutch fork to use, or if I need a totally different one, and same for the z-bar and mount. Anyone ever done this swap in a car that era that can give me some pointers?

Also, any suggestions on where to find proper manuals would be great. Fleabay kinda stinks with their descriptions.

I have never done a swap in a car, but I would think that you would need a front sump car oil pan and I think that a car bell housing and fork would make life easier. The linkage could come from any 58/59 car or possibly modify the 6 pieces.

I just did a swap on a 1960 F100 from a 223 to a 292. I don't know if the rear motor mount flanges on the clutch housing will be in your way on the car or not, but you will probably need that front sump oil pan. Also, you have to switch sides with fuel line and generator wires, and the bottom hose on radiator is on wrong side. If your radiator is so good that you want to use it regardless, I once had a radiator shop switch sides with the upper neck, so they should be able to do the lower.. It did not appear as sturdy to me as before, but it worked. I'm not sure if I would do it again, but never say never. Then of course, there is the exhaust to refit. It is more trouble than it seems to change from 6 to 8 but very doable. Cheers

Measure the depth of the bellhousing, from the engine mounting face to the transmission mounting face, compare the 6 cylinder one to the truck one. Some trucks had deeper bellhousings than cars. Your modified later trans will bolt to a Y V8 car bellhousing for sure, not necessarily to your truck bell.

Boy. Thanks guys. There are a couple things I didn't realize. Didn't even think about the oil pan or radiator. I did notice the fuel pump, but figured that would be easy enough. Guess I need to hunt a lot more parts before I try and tackle this. Bums me out cause I miss driving it so much. I just had my first kid, so money is also a factor right now. Maybe I should just find another 6 and sell the 8 I bought. Seems impossible for some reason to find what I need in working order in my neck of the woods. Thanks for all the input.

Where are you located, members on here are scattered around the country and alot have left over parts. I have several front sump pans and a car bell housing that I will let go. Just ask around and someone will have parts or know where they are.
John good to see that you finally made it back.

You have a number of guys fairly close. Royce Brechler lives in Wi. Jerry Christianson and Randy Conner are in Mn. There's more in IL. You're not alone. Do the 292, the parts will not be that expensive if you take your time and don't grab the first part off Ebay you see. You will like the car with the V8.
