Yes.  You will have to drill and tap the case in the correct location for the vacuum modulator.  Dimension can be taken from the FMX or later COM that has a modulator.

Getting the fordomatic to perform the 123 shift pattern I assume refers to swaping in some FMX parts and adding the vacum line?

Sounds like the sensible solution.  I doubt if you'll ever drive enough miles to pay for the AOD conversion with fuel savings.

I can get the FOM rebuilt and upgraded for around $700.  Seems like a good way to go and keep the car as original as possible.  If I find I want to go on longer trips can always revisit the AOD issue.

Unless you are going to have a high horsepower engine and racing slicks, there is probably no advantage for you to convert to an FMX, your only gain would be the 1-2-3 shift, which can be done by upgrading the FOM.  The cooler is a good idea, but if you choose the FMX you can put the FOM input shaft and front pump on the FMX and retain your original converter.

What can you expect to gain from the FMX versus the original tranny?  I have been debating what to do for a tranny in my 55 Tbird.  I am getting closer to making that decision.  I thought about the AOD conversion but that gets pretty expensive pretty fast.  What gains are there from the FMX versus modifying the Cruiseomatic to do the 123 shift using the FMX parts?  Also I have an air cooled tranny now, if jumping to the FMX I assume I need to add a tranny cooler?

Well.................Last week I traded for a 302 and trans for my 54 f100.The trans was covered in grease and I didn,t really look at it.I just thought it was c4.But,when I got it home , I found out it,s a fmx.

So I am thinking about trying this again. It,s out of a 1976 truck but I don,t know for sure what it might have orginally been from.

My question is: When searching for a pump and torque converter,What year and model cars and trucks should I look for?(besides the 57-59)

In other words, when I am looking on craigslist or ebay. What cars and truck should I search? I see fe engines and trans from time to time.Would those have cruiseo,s?

        http://www.y-blocksforever.com/tech/html/fmx_upgrade.html

I think I am reading the article right ,that you can use a cruiseo pump and torque converter also?

Carl, I tried to e-mail and pm you thru this site, neither would work.  I have a 56 converter and flywheel complete in very good shape and 2 flywheels separate.  Attached pic of complete unit. E-mail me at webconst@gte.net, if you want pic's of flywheels.  Might work for you until you can work out FMX solution.  Where are you located.  I am in Central Fl.  Thank you, Charlie

You can if your FOM has a one-way clutch in the middle of the transmission.  This is found in the ones that will downshift to 1st when you floor the throttle from a dead stop.  You also have to use the FMX detent, sometimes referred to as a "rooster comb", and drill and tap the back of the case for the vacuum modulator.
