I have a 56 Ford with a 292 and Fordomatic. My starter ring needs replacing ,so I thought I would try the FMX/Fordomatic conversion.I can not find the article.

Do you guys have a link to it? And would you advice the conversion. Thanks,Carl

I wanted to add this also.I found someone that has a fmx, he says was bolted a 351W and he will give me the yoke.Does it matter what FMX I use?

Carl:

This was on the old site, but I cannot find it either.  In a nutshell, the FMX can be bolted to the FOM bellhousing by putting the bolts in the bottom two holes and transferring the upper two bolt holes from the bellhousing to the FMX case.  If your FOM has the 29 spline input shaft instead of the 17 spline, you can put the FOM front pump on the FMX and use the original converter.  If your FOM is 17 spline, you either have to find a 29 spline converter or put the 17 spline input shaft in the FMX.  This involves a complete teardown of both trans.  Or you can leave the FMX front pump on and have a special converter built that is Y block on the front and FMX on the back.  This will require a '59 or later flywheel with the starter ring gear on it, as the special converter will be a sealed unit instead of the bolt-together one in your '56.

At the rear, you may have to fabricate a rear mount, and you may have to shorten or lengthen the driveshaft.  Or, put the FOM output shaft and tail housing on the FMX and use the stock mount and driveshaft.  Watch the tail housing gasket very closely in the lower corners, it may not cover the corner and will leak.  Any FMX will work.

P.S. I just looked at that starter ring again.I think I am going to try to cut those welds and see if I can,t just flip it around and reweld it.Have any of you tried to do this?

2 Things

One if you use the FMX tail shaft the speedometer cable and geer will have to be changed if you are going into a 56 or older car.

point two,  if you use a low torque starter I don't think you will need to worry about the ring geer and you will end up with a much better starter.  Just my thoughts.  Gerry

I am starting to see why some of you folks just but an adapter.I am not sure if I want to spend that much on the old car.I might go with a different engine after all.

Hi-Test in Santa Ana California 714-540-9600  The web site is  still under construction, but it works. I have done the FMX conversion and it's not a bad way to go. I had to rebuild the FOM so it really didn't cost me much more. Use the FOM tail shaft it will save time and money.  Mu thoughts. Gerry

You can if your FOM has a one-way clutch in the middle of the transmission.  This is found in the ones that will downshift to 1st when you floor the throttle from a dead stop.  You also have to use the FMX detent, sometimes referred to as a "rooster comb", and drill and tap the back of the case for the vacuum modulator.

Carl, I tried to e-mail and pm you thru this site, neither would work.  I have a 56 converter and flywheel complete in very good shape and 2 flywheels separate.  Attached pic of complete unit. E-mail me at webconst@gte.net, if you want pic's of flywheels.  Might work for you until you can work out FMX solution.  Where are you located.  I am in Central Fl.  Thank you, Charlie
