Hi again.  As we discussed before, my engine seems to be a bit of this and that.  I have an early 58 Fairlane with vin plate showing a 292.  The block is a ECG. The heads are ECZ C or G .  I can't see behind the distributor close enough.  The intake manifold is a 4 BBL ECZ.  The carb is an Edelbrock 1406, 600cfm.  The distributor has no vacuum advance, just mechanical .

I have put a Petronix ignition into it and it runs nicely.  Seems like quite a dog's breakfast to me.  What do you guys think?  And, thanks for all the great ideas and education.

The block is a 272 block.



If you think you see the letters ECZ-C under the water ports, its likely an ECZ-G. The ECZ-C would have its casting numbers on the outside of the cylinder head between the exhaust ports.



If that carb fits the manifold without an adapter, it's an ECZ-B intake.

If I look at the engine from the driver's side, I can see the ECZ beside the distributor on the passenger side head.   The last C or G is hidden by the body of the distributor.  Even with the cap off it is difficult to read.  Is that the spot for the G head?

Also, should I think about adding a vac advance to my distributor? 

"Dog's breakfast" around here means just about everything leftover is given to the dog.

Try looking in the same spot on the front of the head where the water passage into the intake is. The distributor won't be in your way.

It finally got near freezing this morning so I went out and pulled my distributor.

Yes, I have ECZ-G heads.  My intake is ECZ-B. My block is a 272 (thought I was getting a 292) ECZ-G.

My distributor is a FOMOCO FDS 1217 AZ    501...My question is, should there be a vacuum advance on this distributor?  There is a slanted hole on the side with two little vertical holes on the case, that is all.  Also, by turning the distributor, I was able to read the number and see the oil cap tube that was hidden before.

Should I just order a new rebuilt one or fuss with this old one?

Oh, I talked to a guy near me who has a 4x2 intake with two teapot carbs and linkage for sale for a 312 he said. Anybody interested? I also bumped into a mechanic who said he has 9 years rebuilding Y-blocks experience.  Not bad for a small town of about 400 people!

Recheck the block number. If the number you're seeing is above the oil filter, you likely have a 292 or 312. You might be looking at an ECZ-C block. If the number is behind the generator, it might be a 272.

I must remember to put my glasses on when I read those block numbers.  You are correct.  My block is a ECG block just like the ones on the Mummert site with the number also upsidedown by the alternator.  I guess that makes it a 272. 

Does anyone have an idea about my distributor? 

The wind is blowing, it's 9 above zero, or -13 C.  The wind is howling, visibiltiy is about 100 yards with the snow...put another log on the fire.

Distributor # FDS-12127-A(no AZ in parts book) is for a 56 272 with 2bbl carb and yes it should have a vacuum advance as listed in parts catalogue.Hope this helps.
