so i really love the look of triple dueces. i know they are a pain to set up and all that but i just think they are really neat. so ive heard the 573 is the best 2x3 intake and is designed for the larger port heads. would a 553 work ok on a 59 f100 292. could i maybe port the intake a little to help the flow out some? what is the advantages of having the multiple carbs other than it looking cool? does it give more hp or torque. thanks guys.

We learned in a recent thread that 573 is for '57 (big ports) and 553 is for '55 (smaller ports) I think it's best to get what matches your heads. As for advantages I think most on here will agree that the single four on a Blue Thunder is just about the best way to go for the street but the 3 x 2s sure does look cool.

For what it's worth, my '56 Bird with large-port heads (312 c.i) ran great with a 553 and a trio of 1 1/16" throat Holley 94's. Of course, I did swap to a 573 after Tim went through the heads. I would be curious to see an "apples to apples" dyno test, with the only variable being the intake. If budget is a concern, the 553 would work just fine on your F-100 and look just as cool...I've seen the 573's cange hands for north of $350 for a bare manifold (I paid $300 for mine) or $450+ for a manifold with buildable carbs. If you're patient you can probably pick up a 553 for around $150, and piece together a set of 94's pretty reasonably.

im not really building my truck for all out hp but more just moderate horspower and as much torque as i can find easily. so would the smaller port design hurt my torque much or not.

The 573 has better airflow than the 553. You should be fine with it. the 553s seem to be more o with what you can get that fits the budget you have. You will be happy with either.

As mentioned, for your purposes, either one will be fine.In fact, with a small displacement street engine, larger intake ports and passages can cause the loss of some of the low end torque,so the 553 will serve you well.

I think there was an article in Yblock magazine years ago, by J. Christensen? that ran a flow test on several of the 3x2 manifolds and the 573 came out on top. I have a 57 312 auto. What kind of linkage did you use for your 56. Is there a hood clearance problem?
Thanks,

Not sure but I may have a 553 intake on an old engine in the shed. The numbers have been ground off so I’ll not know exactly which intake it is until I look at the ports. I’ll get it pulled off the engine today and confirm. If it is, then I’ll run it back to back on the dyno mule in the near future with a borrowed 573 intake that’s currently being used for dyno testing. If someone has the Offy 3X2 intake sitting loose, this would be a good time to test all three manifolds in back to back testing for a valid comparison of all three. Based on the current round of tests with the 573 intake, this is not a bad intake at all as it’s producing some pretty impressive numbers on an engine that has stock and unported heads.

The races out at Eagle Field are more about fun and what looks cool so it should add a nice touch.
