Finally finished my garage project and got back to working on cars, one of my priorities was finishing up my 301 build. Steel crank, .060" over 292. Mummert (Clay Smith) 272-s cam with matching springs. C1TE rods, Ross forged racing pistons, chrome moly push rods, Small letter G (Dearborn) heads, completely redone with guides and valves. Decked to .010" in the hole, heads shaved .030" and intake planed to match. B intake, 4100 carb. Rollmaster timing chain 4* advance. Used Valvoline 20 - 50 racing oil (about the only thing available from 3 auto parts chains visited) Test stand made from old trailer with oil pressure guage, voltage regulator, temp and amp guage, Tack and adjustable timing light. Primed gas, fired up and held at 2000 rpm for 20 minutes, varying rpm once in a while. Motor never skipped a beat and sounds very strong. Only problem was the water pump I chose to use weeped a bit. (thats what happens when you have excess stock and you just decide to take one clean it and try it) Will post some pics and a video when I get a chance, I couldn't video the break in because I was short handed

Billy thats pretty much what I think I'm going to do for a motor for my 57 F100. Maybe a little more cam and headers. Let us know if you get any video of it, I bet it sounds great.

Sounds like a good time. It's neat to hear your engine run on a stand before you install it. Can't wait to see the video.

Beleive it or not Lon, I am in hot pursuit of a Y powered snow plow, there is a 63 or 4 truck with a plow and a small home made wrecker boom on the back that has been sitting on the side of the road about an hour from me, I have been by twice and left message at the wrong house the first time and I informed them to give the notice to their neighbor when they called me, the second time was with a buddy and left one of his cards at the correct house but still never heard from the guy. it is yellow with a big 292 spray painted on the doors, pretty rusty but would make a great yard truck. I will keep pursuit until I own it. I spent half the day plowing yesterday and woke this morning to another 8" on the ground, now I have to waste another half day plowing. If things go as planned I will have a Y plow truck, my drivers, 55 Vicky and 57 F100, I will probably sell my 55 Customline, I will have my 58 F500 rack dump and may convert that to car hauler. my 55 F350 yard truck. My 59 P400 (which has a 223 but can be converted to Y very easy) as a parts truck to go to flea markets and shows. and eventually a Y powered boat. I saw about 20 years ago I believe a beautiful red Donzi that was Y powered. That should be enough Y's until my next dream.

I like your idea about the Y powered boat. I have a friend that restores old wood boats and a few have been Y powered, I just posted a pic of the engine on another thread here is the rest of the boat.

Thats a beauty Tim. I used to do boats and was in the antique outboard motor club Inc, I had 70 pre 1960 outboards kicking around my house with over 10 boats at one time, still have quite a bit but sold of quite a bit too. never had too many inboards but worked on a lot. I have a rare 1956 Herter's Duo Foil Flying Fish, only 3 known to exist, garranteed fastest boat of 56 (for outboard 16 ft runabouts) less than 100 made.
Finns are solid Nickel, look like 57 scrub, maybe scrub copied these as they were the year before the scrubs.
Note the 2 coils, motor is considered one of those dock buster's, starts in opposite rotation for reverse, no gears. Its a 1958 Mark 78, I have to keep all covers off my motors or the mice will build nest in them.

Y block Billy (1/24/2010) ..........I have to keep all covers off my motors or the mice will build nest in them.Billy. I think you need one of these for the mice.
That's the shop cat. I’ve pulled apart a couple of Y’s where mice built nests in the valley area by crawling through the oil fill tube and yet another Y engine where mice built a nest in a cylinder by crawling up the exhaust pipe and finding an open exhaust valve. I have a cat door on the shop and the shop cat stays fat. This particular cat sleeps though engines being run on the dyno so it’s pretty laid back. Linda says it's deaf but it hears the food bowl being lifted in the next room so I don't think that's the case. But I do have to run out the occaisional possum or skunk though so a cat door may not be a good idea for you.

Billy, I've got some respect for outboards, that was the first boat I ever had, it was a 115 Mercury and it ran great. I don't have a boat of my own now but if I ever get another it will be a Century with a Y in it. Ted, I like your shop cat! It looks just like my wifes cat Ollie except ours has a snaggle tooth that sticks out like Sgt. Snorkle.
