I know there has been a lot of discussion about T5 transmissions behind Y blocks. I am wondering though if the trans tunnel needs to be modified on a 56 Victoria.  Also will the shifter be located far enough in front of the seat for decent shifting and is there also an offset shifter kit available.  Thanks.  Dave.

I would imagine not, the Vicky housed some pretty big transmissions, including the ford-o-matic. I'm not sure, though,

I put a T5 in my '56 Customline Victoria and the trans tunnel did not need to be modified except for cutting the hole for the shifter. I did put (Wise Guys) bucket seats in the car so I can't really answer the question regarding distance from the shifter to the original split bench, but keep in mind the T5 has a very close ratio short throw and the type of shifter you choose will also play into the clearance issue. I chose a Hurst Billet Plus shifter and it worked out well. I don't know of anyone selling offset shifter assemblies for the T5. You will need to relocate or fabricate a new trans mount.

I appreciate the info Rono. I was mainly concerned about the tunnel itself needing to be modified or not. It looks like John Mummert's T5 transmission to bell housing adapter rotates the trans a little towards the driver to bring it closer. That's probably the way I will go. The main reason for the swap is fuel economy. Thanks again Dave.

Just finished putting a T-5 in my 56 Merc and I must say it fit without any drama. No floor mods were necessary and the shifter hole landed just ahead of the front seat. I purchased a shifter arm from Lokar that has a double bend in it, cut about 4 inches out of the bottom and re-welded it. The finished product provided a perfect bend to clear the front seat and looks factory.

It's good to hear that it will go in with out any drama as you put it and looks factory. What about a clutch disc? Do I need to look for one from a specific model or vehicle?  Thanks  Dave.

I purchased the adapter and clutch from Mr. Mummert. I don't like the high pedal effort that the stock style 3 finger pressure plate gives so I went with a diaphram Style. Mummert was able to get me a nice clutch set up for a reasonable price.

Could it perhaps be the original clutch disc from the Mustang T5 thatis required? Dave

Yes, I believe that if you use the original pressure plate with a 5.0 Mustang disc you will be in business. Your only criteria is spline count and diameter and I believe the Mustang disc fits the bill.

Dave;

For what it is worth, I went with a Centerforce Clutch and pressure plate set-up that results in a very easy clutch pedal. I am using an 11" disk. and if/when you order you just tell them the tranny you are using so they know the correct spline and shaft diameter.

Rono.
