Talkwrench (5/26/2010)
My 56 fairlane 4 door will be arriving soon and it wont be long until I get to the exhaust system. Trying to get an idea of what works best on the ol' 292. One thing I will tell you is I have a set of Smithys [short ones] coming with it. Also a B manifold, 600 Holley and electronic ign [thanks to Skip , Kidcourier] So whats a good diameter pipe[s]? crossovers, muffler position etc. It has to perform and sound like a meaty Y block Also I purchased the tips that go through the bumper, how does that work? surely the whole system is not hard mounted ?? Cheers, Rob. Looks like nice car, the tailpipe ends just go into the bumper outlet boxes and there is a sort of fibre seal to help stop the pipe rattling, this is if they are the cast alloy type.

Talk wrench: I might be corrected on this but I think the seller was indicating the Tips are dummies. Due to corrosion problems later setups usually put a turn down on the end of the tail pipe & few inched before the bumper. Also, I hope you are on good terms with your neighbors, as short Smitty's are likely to be very noisy. You don't need really loud exhaust to get the unique sound of a Y block...

I am running 2 1/4" pipes. The muffler shop made a 2 X 2/14 reducers to connect to the header and slip into the thru bumper exhaust tips.
You gotta have the right tools and know how to use 'em.TC - Austin, Texas

Talkwrench, Smitty's are good, but my favorite of late has been Porter mufflers. A lot like a Smitty but I think Clark thats owns the company builds them a little better. www.portermuflers.com You can even listen to what they sound like on their website. I would go 2 1/4" all the way back and mount the muffleres just ahead of the rear end so you don't have any vibration up under the cab area. If their too loud for you you can always add a cross pipe or balance tube between the two systems . A "X" pipe will make it quiter yet and probably enhance some low end torque.
