the 12 is sort of like the 120 on the 56 speedo dial so your brain can read it properly

frank i been thinking of making up a pressure gauge & the 12 is at the top just upside down

Why would the 12 be upside down? wouldn't that be 51 o'clock??

Moz,

You might want to get the pressure checked when you get a chance. That will tell you what kind of shape the pump's in.

Is the 12 at the bottom of an Aussie clock?

If you R&R'd the transmission the rod adjustment could have been knocked off a little.  Also you could have dislodged some crud that hung up the valve body temporarily.  I doubt it was the converter not seated when installed.  This breaks the drive of the pump and you don't go anywhere because there is no pressure.

However, taking a while to engage in reverse when cold is a symptom of a loss of fluid pressure when the piston O-rings are cold and contracted.  As they warm the swell and seal better.

Finally, trans fluid is very detergent and putting new fluid in a warn transmission can "clean" it too much and the clutches start slipping.

I hope the rod adjustment fixed your problem.  If it was any of the other situations all you can do is drive it unfortunately it will get worse until you need a rebuild.
