Bonneville was fun even though we didn't come home with a record, but to me the real star was my '58 F-100. I drove it the 1500+ mile round trip and it gave me no complaints. It carried a 1900 lb camper with another 300 lbs of crap inside and pulled my Triumph along for good measure. We cruised at 70 mph out on I-80 much of the way and on the return trip I broke up the monotony with a side trip through Yosemite. The old Y-Block hauled the Alaskan over Tioga Pass at nearly 10000'. This is the same engine and trans. that you guys have seen lay a good strip of rubber in three gears, talk about an all-around truck. E/PP record at Bonneville may have to wait till next year but I still love my Y.

Great pictures documenting a fun trip! The '58 definitely looks like it is feeling a load!

The sad thing is most people probably thing you are running a scrub and can't appreciate the fact they are getting passed by a 50+ year old Y-block.

That thing is a runner! I followed Tim & Kathy back from Elmo in June, and before leaving Tim warned me that he liked to cruise about 60 mph... as we sailed over the Tehachape pass at about 70 mph I was pleasantly surprised... Having put about 10k miles on my 223" powered '60, these trucks were built to work. Not that I am a big bowtie hater, but this era of F-100 is far better than any C-10 I've ever used...

The "do it Yerself" Sickle trailer's kind of neat too. Use the bike for a pit bike?

pegleg (8/20/2010) The "do it Yerself" Sickle trailer's kind of neat too. Use the bike for a pit bike? Thanks! I was real happy with it. I guess you could call it a "pit bike" I originally thought I'd use it to run into town from the camp but never used it for that. I did ride it around the pits and it came home covered in salt.

Glad you had a great trip, I have a 58 I use as nearly my daily driver, 223 but if I don't sell it it will eventually have a Y. Just curious, is your front end all stock in that truck? I was thinking of using mine to haul my car to columbus but afraid of getting too squirrelly with that old truck having a 55 vicky on the trailer behind me.

It's all stock and handels very well. I think the key is a good steering box, I've driven many that I would not want to take very far.
