Today I was trying to find out some particulars on a Holley carb for a 1958 Mercury with 430 engine. Noticed that they had the same firing order as Y's. I wonder what the 11:1 CR monster would sound like with modified exhaust!

Mike. Correct me if I’m wrong but I thought the firing order for the MEL engines was 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8. That would make it the same as the FE’s and the early SBF’s. And also the same as small and big block scrubs as well as many of the later model Buicks, Pontiacs, Oldsmobiles, as well as small and big block Mopars if you convert the side for side cylinder numbering sequence. No wonder all those engines sound the same. On a sidenote, the 2011 5.0L Mustang engine that was just released does have the same firing order as the Ford Flathead V8, LYB's, and Y-Block.

Ted, I think the scrub firing order is 18436572, don't ask me how I remember that but it was the first firing order I ever remembered as a teen even though I never owned one. guess it was working on friends stuff.

Billy, A Chevy is only numbered differently. If you convert a Chevy to the Ford numbering sheme (or vise versa) you will find that most of them share the same firing order. And then you have the 351 and I think 302 H.O. which use a different firing order which is still different than the Y and Flathead.

He has a library of old manuals and we were looking through one for carb data. It showed the 1958 Merc. 430 with 15486372. There was a special note in a margin saying that the 1958 Lincoln 430 firing order had changed, but I dont remember what the Linc. was. Lincoln and Mercury F.O. different on the same engine in the same year . Wish I could look at it again. We both chuckled at the idea of mechanics getting messed up on the big engines in '58. I owe him a payment so will take another look at the next opportunity.

Well, never mind . We scoured through 3 or 4 manuals, but couldnt even find a firing order for '58 merc 430 listed. Only the Lincoln. So Ted no doubt is right. Maybe it was some kind of "Y-warp" in space due to sun spots.

Mike, i can see how easy it would to be confused with these 2 engines, 430 mercury and lincoln, this was from google search, i can only confirm my 60 MK5 430 is latter fireing order. regards bill. 1958 with 3 X 2 Barrel Carbs Max Brake Horsepower - 400 @ 4800 Max Torque - N/A Stroke - 3.70 Bore - 4.30 Compression - 10.5 Firing Order - 15486372

If you go to U-Tube and google PSMCDR 2007 you'll find a match race between my F code and Brian Steffina's 430 '58 Merc. The merc won an award for the best restoration at the Detroit Show in 2007 and is presently on display at Floyd Garret's Muscle car museum in Sevieville, Tennessee. It's gorgeous. Royce Brechler has (or had) one also.
