[b]pegleg (8/29/2010) the first year I went the guy at the gate, who was not a kid, asked me if I was in the right place. He said this is a race for "Musclecars, ya know" Not a car show! Said I hate to take yer money and have you be embarrased. Told him I thought I'd be OK. I was matched with a 390 Javelin 4 speed. Beat him 3 straight.

We didn't do so well at Bonneville this year but it's stories like this that make being a Y nut fun. Wink

Though I didn't learn on my truck, it is my first vehicle and it had column shift when I got it. It only went into 2nd and 3rd. Some of us under 40 know what's going on.

Charlie, I suspect you and Tim, along with most of the folks on this site are exceptions to that statement. Most of the audience at the muscle car races are there to see the Hemi's and GTO's or LS-6's run. You'd be amazed at how few had ever heard of a 312, let alone an F code. I've been asked everything from how do you get a 390 to run that fast to why I could run a Scrub motor in a Ford! the first year I went the guy at the gate, who was not a kid, asked me if I was in the right place. He said this is a race for "Musclecars, ya know" Not a car show! Said I hate to take yer money and have you be embarrased. Told him I thought I'd be OK. I was matched with a 390 Javelin 4 speed. Beat him 3 straight.

John went the next year with his F code Bird`. Embarrased a 69 Shelby 500. I almost had Royce talked in bringing his Ti-Power thunderbird, but he never got there..

Lincoln Y has same firing order as Ford Y, And MEL has the same as FE 15426378 No change from 58 up to 67.. Somebody's book is incorrect. 58 Merc shop manual confirms.

I was pretty certain that a Lincoln Y was 15486372. Looked it up in an old Motor's Manual and it does use the early Flathead & Y-Block firing order not the 15426378.

I had no idea that Ford changed the 430 firing order after the first 2 years.

We both run three speed Column shifters, the old guys in the crowd went nuts. Anybody under 40 couldn't figure out what the hell we were doing!

I'm impressed!  I learned to operate a manual trans. on a column when I was sixteen, but to get times like that? w00t  Sweet!

Well, never mind Crazy .  We scoured through 3 or 4 manuals, but couldnt even find a firing order for '58 merc 430 listed.  Only the Lincoln.  So Ted no doubt is right.

Maybe it was some kind of "Y-warp" in space due to sun spots.

Mike, i can see how easy it would to be confused with these 2 engines, 430 mercury and lincoln, this was from google search, i can only confirm my 60 MK5 430 is latter fireing order. regards bill.

1958 with 3 X 2 Barrel Carbs
Max Brake Horsepower - 400 @ 4800
Max Torque - N/A
Stroke - 3.70
Bore - 4.30
Compression - 10.5
Firing Order - 15486372

1959 with 4 Barrel Carb
Max Brake Horsepower - 350 @ 4800 rpm (375 for Lincoln)
Max Torque - 490 @ 3100 rpm
Stroke - 3.70
Bore - 4.30
Compression - 10.1 (10.5 for Lincoln)
Firing Order - 15486372

1960 with 4 Barrel Carb
Max Brake Horsepower - 350 @ 4800 rpm
Max Torque - 490 @ 3100 rpm
Stroke - 3.70
Bore - 4.30
Compression - 10.1
Firing Order - 15426378

Thanks a lot Bill.  So I'm not going crazy, yet.   Frank's result against one of these is impressive indeed.!

The Turnpike Cruisers, along with the '57 Ford hot dogs would have been on S. Hillside when I was walking to and from grade school.  I recall a '59 Lincoln, the '64 plymouths (later on), '57 olds, '57 and '58 Mercs,  and our baseball coach drove us to and from practice in a '56 Ford car.  Actually every car of the era frequented the street, because down at the end, 1 mile or so, was a burger stand.  Some of the cars even had chains dragging to make sparks at night.

It looks like the closest I will get to a '58 Merc 430 is the 4V Holley carb due for arrival.  Won it for $1, but could only narrow the era down to pre '59, hoping it was a '57 carb.  Found out after winning about it being for the '58.  Does anyone have a guess about the CFM?  Only curious, as this will probably end up as a personal mini-museum piece.

Mike, located in the Siskiyou mountains, Southern, OR 292 powered 1946 Ford 1/2 ton, '62 Mercury Meteor, '55 Country Squire (parting out), '64 Falcon, '54 Ford 600 tractor.

I think the Merc was a couple pounds heavier' I can find out. He's run a 14.0 flat at 100 mph with that barge. I was impressed! I wonder why we heard nothing about those cars back in the 50's, or at least I didn't.  The F code probably does make about the same power as the Merc, Thanks to the John's (Mummert & Feistritzer). We both run three speed Column shifters, the old guys in the crowd went nuts. Anybody under 40 couldn't figure out what the hell we were doing!

So......from the video we conclude????

Franks outfit has about the same horsepower as the 430 Merc.

The Merc weighs more.

Frank was quicker on the tree (that day).
