My first guess would be the splines are worn where the arm fits on the shaft that protrudes through the cowl.

Hi, If you think it could be the motor, go to ebay and search 1953 Buick wiper motor. I did and got 2 N.O.S. motors for my 55 for under $25 ea. Same motor as FoMoCo, only not near as much in demand. Put one on with only minor alterations, I think it was with the pivots on the arm. Has worked for five years, no problem. Electric wipers are darn good but are pretty expensive for some of us. Go to electric - I use the New Ports and like them (have on three cars).

I like electric wipers too, but I ran vacuum wipers for many years. If your fuel pump is working right, you have no vacuum leaks and the motor and linkage is in good shape, they really aren't that bad. They usually stall opposite of the park position when something is wrong.

I remember one time my dad tied a string to the good wiper arm and when it went to the side and started to return it pulled the other wiper to wipe the windscreen. Worked well as I remember. Those were the days....

I'd been looking at a replacement for mine. Eventually I will update the fuel system with an electric pump and better fuel filter. The vacuume wipers don't work they're best anyway this would push them beyond useful. There are some "50's charm" items that don't charm me. Do the newport wipers have intermittent? I can't make sense of their web site and Do the Castle wipers switch fit in the original position using the original knob? Twice the price but would prefer local and there's always freight to consider.
