Hi there, this is my first post, all the way from the "land of the long white cloud". I've got a 57 retractable that I need to replace the dizzy on. I've been reading some of the threads on here about different distributors and have decided to give the windsor dizzy a try. I bought one today $100 and as mentioned on other threads the shaft needs to be lengthened. If I'm correct, the new shaft needs to be 90mm long, but I noticed that the new gear on the windsor dizzy is on a seperate shaft that has a tongue which fits into a grove on the shaft from the dizzy, also, the windsor gear has a long sleeve which acts as a collar over the tongue and grove coupling. What I would like to know is do you really have to weld a new shaft on to it, or, can the new shaft simply be slotted into the existing grove on the windsor shaft, as long as i include a similar collar over the coupling??? Any ideas would be appreciated. Cheers ken.

Any ideas would be appreciated. Cheers ken. Kiwi, what you have there is a procomp style of late distributor, they have 2 piece lower shaft with a collar over the slotted join. The distributors mentioned re welding are the original 67 -71 falcon style. Yes you can just modify the lower end as you described. i have done it. My only reservation is the chance of the lower half staying in block when removing dist, this could be solved by securing the 2 parts better.

Lust had another idea, and that is to make the collar a light press fit over bothe shafts. Ken.

Probably a stupid question, but why not just get a late model Y block distributor like I sent to Moz a couple years ago?

pegleg (8/4/2012) Probably a stupid question, but why not just get a late model Y block distributor like I sent to Moz a couple years ago?I haven't looked into that, just thought the windsor idea sounded pretty good and a cheap way of going electronic, and as I live in NZ I would have to import one from USA. hey frank that dissy is great had no problems with it at all have'nt even needed to touch the points yet

From my experience here in West Oz if you are using a ProComp dizzy you need a lot of luck. I haven't found one yet that works from new for either Chev or Ford. $100 is more than I would give for one of these pieces of #%*+. Like I said I wish you luck. The reluctors in those dizzies are almost always open circuit.
The only reason you would modify a genuine Windsor dizzy is because the late models are in short supply in Oz. having said that, I got a 59 dizzy through this site several years ago from Paul I think. Sorry if I got that wrong. The killer these days is the postage costs.
The members on this site stateside are always extremely helpful (as is Bill).

I don't remember all the details, maybe Moz can tell you. But all you guys gotta do is ask, we can and will find them. Probably for less than a hundred US. I think I paid 57 bucks for Moz's. you might be able to work out something with Lon or one of the Guys from OZ who comes over for The Y block shhotout last of August. Might save some shipping.

Ken, Your realy closing your options off by not being willing to import things. I've had some large thing come across to Australia for example a radiator, one of my intake manifolds, a dizzy, the other day I had a bendtsen AOD adaptor kit turn up. The American market is extensive and inexpensive. If your worried about using a credit card over the net, get a debit card and only have the cash in the account for the transaction you are doing. With the internet, ebay and the Yanks into fities cars. Parts that weren't available 20 years ago are within your reach and you don't even have to leave home. cheers Warren
