There's a 292 motor with a 4 sp. trans @ pto out of a 3 ton truck in one of the online papers here. I have a 61 F100 with a 292 in it and was wondering what the difference is between them. I know He mentioned that his 292 has the 4 bolt mains, but says the motor is essentially the same. Can parts be swapped between the two. How do the motors differ in performance? Since the motor in my F100 is rebuilt, I'm only interested in parts down the road if I need them and if they will fit. But if my motor packed it in, would I have the option of swapping this one in? Just curious.

First of all, the 292 or 312 wasn't available with four bolt mains as far as I know. There shouldn't be any other differences except maybe the crankshaft material or some other bolt on equipment such as the timing gear cover.

If he thinks it has four bolt mains, he may not know what else it doesn't have-you know what I mean?

I have rebuilt probably over 75 y-blocks never seen a 4 bolt main in a y block. I think the owner is thinking of che_by or cleveland.

Not seeing the motor the best I can do is guess whether the engine is a HD truck engine, medium duty truck engine or a car engine.

If it is a true truck engine probably has a 4 bbl intake with big Holley carb and a governor on the carb.

The water pump likely has a 3/4" shaft instead of the 5/8" shaft as in cars or light trucks.

The clutch is probably 11" inch with large input shaft.

The timing covers are different on a truck to a car. I don't remember if the light duty trucks used the car timing cover or the truck timing cover.

The timing chain would be the HD chain instead of the std chain.

Exhaust manifolds will be the ram horns.

Oil dip stick will be in the timing cover.

Probably has a PCV valve hooked to the intake manifold instead of the draft tube.

The valves likely are sodium cooled valves.

If the HD truck engine good chance it will have a steel crankshaft.

Another thing you should check that the engine is a Ford y-block not a Lincoln Y-block.

I have seen certain engines with much heavier main bearing webs. I was told it was a truck block???

Marvh basically said it all.  IF it is a 292 and not Lincoln Y, most eveything can be swapped.  The heads with 7/16 in. exhaust stems are easily changed to the 11/32 in. stems.  But as I understand it anything over an F-600 would be a Linc.  Still would be good to pick up if inexpensive.

61: Further to what has already been mentioned. If the engine is a 1961 to 64 it may have a forged steel crank & or H.D. rods marked C1AE or C2AE. On the downside it may have small intake valve heads of low compression and have several truck only external parts. There are no 4 Bolt main engines, so you are dealing with someone who is uninformed or less than truthful.

While obtaining the engine may be an o.k. idea, thinking it's a good direct swap probably isn't. However, if you could determine (quietly) if it has the H.D. internal parts mentioned, it might be a good buy at the right price. You could probably resell those parts, if in good shape, to someone wanting them for H.D. or race use. They aren't necessary for normal street engines...

Another thing, some of the early HD engines had a better performing head than the 61 regular duty, assuming the exhaust valves would be replaced.  The ones I recently obtained had 73 cc posted chambers and 1.78 in. intakes, on a C2AE block, much better than the '61.  You never know until you dig into it.

Thanks guy's, that's why I brought my question to this site. I think I'll probably buy the motor and maybe do a teardown to see what's inside. Besides, living up here in Northern Canada, these engines or even parts for them are almost non existent. Thanks for the informative answers.

61- If the engine isn't running or the vendor won't let you see inside the crankcase, assume it needs a total rebuild & pay accordingly. It's a 50 year old engine!
