Ok, heres the deal...
Part numbers I used were (from Napa) UP80691 for the Left, and UP90692 for the right. I did NOT need any extra spring kit, etc, as the lower spring worked with the self adjuster kit. So for now everything is installed, but I guess I wont know if they are really working for a while yet?
Some thoughts/observations (I’ve only done the front axle so far):
Really easy to do. Very straightforward, and a good time to lube the backing plates/contact points with the shoes
Pre-adjust the star adjuster prior to reassembly as best you can and BEFORE you put the drums on. The ones on (I think it was) the drivers side are NOT accessible through the slot in the backing plate once assembled, as they are now in a different location.
The cables, etc go towards the back of the car
Very easy to install the kit once you figure it out
GOOD LUCK finding the 2-1/2" fender washers. I may have to get some on line-I used 2" washers for now, but I’m not crazy about them. Under just the right circumstances, it seems they could cause the shoe to not retract and leave the brake stuck; the 2-1/2" would be better by far. Also, don’t try making your own retainers out of 1/8" bar stock.....its too thick to allow the cable end to seat on the anchor pin properly....should have measured that before I made several of them....
Id be interested to know if anyone has been running this for a while and if they have had any problems....the fender washers seem kind of thin to hold the shoes in alignment....although there shouldn’t be much lateral load on them....but I have to think ford made the originals so thick for a reason?
Haven’t done the backs yet; I wont until I figure out what to do on the retainers. Not sure if it will be any more difficult due to parking brake mechanism or not....Ill post if I run into any issues when I do it.
Now on to figuring out why my brand new Demon Jr runs like absolute CRAP right out of the box (think undriveable....AARRRRGGGGHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!)
