oldcarmark (7/15/2010) Ron,I thought about swapping sides for backing plates.Cant because of the "E " brake opening.Mark, why dont you just throw away this adjuster kit and leave brakes as normal, then you can adjust brakes like rest of these cars. Y LOL

Because I have installed the front disc brakes the rears need to be kept in better adjustment.Besides I like a challenge to take parts from a later model and retrofit them. Also since I installed the lowering blocks on the rear to match the drop on the front from the Granada spindles its a little more difficult to adjust the rear brakes manually. The blocks interfere with the adjusting tool.

I dont think that there is anything preventing you from making a second opening for "emergency" adjustments. I have to wonder if there isnt a way to swap around the backing plates to get them to align....maybe left to right or something, or two plates from the same side, etc.... I never really looked into it. I still need to validate part numbers used on front/rear. I do remember looking it up on line to confirm left/right, and im pretty sure i confirmed front/rear before i started the work....

That should work. Some of the early backing plates that were used on first self adjuster brakes had the two holes.
The only time you would need to use the hole for an adjuster wrench is if the shoe should become worn into the drum and you needed to release it.

I guess I should restate my question. Is there anything that would prevent roughing in the correct size opening with a drill and fiinishing it with a little hand file?I think the adjusters would work fine if this is the only real modification required to do this installation. The 64 Ford F100 uses the same shoes on the front and the adjuster kits are readily available.

I am considering doing this swap.Is it not possible to create a second "adjuster" hole in the backing plate?Use a stock plug to cover the original and add a second one for the "new" hole.Just wondered if its possible.

Ok, heres the deal...
Pre-adjust the star adjuster prior to reassembly as best you can and BEFORE you put the drums on. The ones on (I think it was) the drivers side are NOT accessible through the slot in the backing plate once assembled, as they are now in a different location. I'm concerned about the adjuster being in a location that you can't adjust. Everything seems great as long as you don't need to remove drum. How will you loosen the shoes to remove the drum? Especially if there is any ridge at all.
