I would like to install brake self adjusters to the original drum brakes on my 56 Victoria. I notice that Mac's has the repair kits for 58-59 Mercury. Does anyone know if these will work on my 56 Ford. Or are there any other sources for the correct kits. Thanks Dave

A pictorial article and list of parts for this conversion can be found in the Jan./Feb. '04 EarlyBird CTCI magazine. The author was Mike McNamee, ph. 770 594 7892.

For those of us that don't have access to the mag. Perhaps it could be added to our technical section. Or published in the Y-Block magazine. Can you check into that? Even a scan would help. Chuck in NH
Y's guys rule! Looking for McCullouch VS57 brackets and parts. Also looking for 28 Chrysler series 72 parts. And early Hemi parts.

I would be interested in finding out about self adjusting brakes for a 56. I started hating adjusting brakes 50 years ago and I still don't like it.

If Dave can't reach the author, I'd be glad to attempt scan & email (or hard copy forward, if needed) when provided with address. Would welcome feedback in return, as I plan the same conversion for rear drums eventually (after front disc kit installation).

I think I have a correct answer to your request for self-adjuster kits.In the Nov 09 edition of the Crown Vic assoc. magazine a member has added adjuster kits to his 55 Ford.Part #'s COLL-2A177-KT(left) and C0LL-2A176-KT(right) kits from from Macsantiqueauto'.I just had a look at his online catalogue for 1960-72 Ford cars and those kits look like they are complete with all parts to use on the 55-56 Fords. They sell for $11.95 each and you need one for each drum brake. You will also need 1 C1SS-2049 adjuster return spring for each drum you are converting. These are separate from the kit and sell for $2.95 each.Have a look.

I have the Early Bird article on my computer and would be willing to send it to any one who sends me an email requesting it.

I appreciate the replies. The article in CVA magazine stated to order seperate return springs #C1SS-2049. According to Mac's catalog these springs are for 49-51 Ford rear drums being 4-5/8" long. The adjuster kits are for 58-59 Mercurys which use adjusting springs #B8A-2049 being 4-1/8" long. Does anyone know for sure which springs are required. Thanks again for all the interest & replies. Dave.

Article only lists part# (WagnerF78551S-7041 combi-kit). Doesn't specify spring length.
